Variants of Collapsible Pushdown Systems

چکیده
We analyze the relationship between three ways of generating trees using collapsible pushdown systems (CPS’s): using deterministic CPS’s, nondeterministic CPS’s, and deterministic wordaccepting CPS’s. We prove that (for each level of the CPS and each input alphabet) the three classes of trees are equal. The nontrivial translations increase n− 1 times exponentially the size of the level-n CPS. The same results stay true if we restrict ourselves to higher-order pushdown systems without collapse. As a second contribution we prove that the hierarchy of word languages recognized by nondeterministic CPS’s is infinite. This is a consequence of a lemma which bounds the length of the shortest accepting run. It also implies that the hierarchy of ε-closures of configuration graphs is infinite (which was already known). As a side effect we obtain a new algorithm for the reachability problem for CPS’s; it has the same complexity as previously known algorithms. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.1 Models of Computation

Saturation of Concurrent Collapsible Pushdown Systems
Multi-stack pushdown systems are a well-studied model of concurrent computationusing threads with first-order procedure calls. While, in general, reachability is unde-cidable, there are numerous restrictions on stack behaviour that lead to decidability. To model higher-order procedures calls, a generalisation of pushdown stacks called col-lapsible pushdown stacks are required. Re...
متن کاملA Saturation Method for Collapsible Pushdown Systems
We introduce a natural extension of collapsible pushdown systems called annotated pushdown systems that replaces collapse links with stack annotations. We believe this new model has many advantages. We present a saturation method for global backwards reachability analysis of these models that can also be used to analyse collapsible pushdown systems. Beginning with an automaton representing a se...
متن کاملStrictness of the Collapsible Pushdown Hierarchy
We present a pumping lemma for each level of the collapsible pushdown graph hierarchy in analogy to the second author’s pumping lemma for higher-order pushdown graphs (without collapse). Using this lemma, we give the first known examples that separate the levels of the collapsible pushdown graph hierarchy and of the collapsible pushdown tree hierarchy, i.e., the hierarchy of trees generated by ...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Model Checking (Collapsible) Higher-Order Pushdown Systems
We study (collapsible) higher-order pushdown systems — theoretically robust and wellstudied models of higher-order programs — along with their natural subclass called (collapsible) higher-order basic process algebras. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the model checking complexity of a range of both branching-time and linear-time temporal logics. We obtain tight bounds on data, expression,...
متن کاملA Pumping Lemma for Collapsible Pushdown Graphs of Level 2
We present a pumping lemma for the class of collapsible pushdown graphs of level 2. This pumping lemma even applies to the ε-contractions of level 2 collapsible pushdown graphs. Our pumping lemma also improves the bounds of Hayashi’s pumping lemma for indexed languages. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.1 Models of Computation
متن کاملFirst-Order Model Checking on Generalisations of Pushdown Graphs
We study the first-order model checking problem on two generalisations of pushdown graphs. The first class is the class of nested pushdown trees. The other is the class of collapsible pushdown graphs. Our main results are the following. First-order logic with reachability is uniformly decidable on nested pushdown trees. Considering first-order logic without reachability, we prove decidability i...
